Fluoride Application

Fluoride is a chemical element occurring in the free state in the form of a diatomic F2 molecule. Taken in appropriate doses, it has a positive effect on our health – it not only prevents tooth decay but also stimulates the formation of new bone tissue. Its deficiencies adversely affect the enamel – too little fluoride makes your enamel thinner, less resistant, and more susceptible to cracks and mechanical injuries.

Fluoride can be found not only in your toothpaste or other oral care products. Its compounds are also present in drinking water or certain foods. In addition, a rich source of fluoride is tea, as well as fish, cereal products, or rennet cheese.

Is Fluoride Harmful?

Recently, the fear of fluoride has increased significantly. Various internet portals, industry “experts,” and others widely discuss the unpleasant consequences of using fluoride and offer replacement solutions in the form of natural herbs. According to dentists, all theories regarding the harmful effects of fluoride are greatly exaggerated. The concentration of fluoride in everyday oral care products is so low that it is completely safe for our health. There are also no studies proving that fluoride in toothpaste is associated with any unpleasant health consequences. Fluoride can be harmful and have toxic effects, but only when we overdose it quite significantly.

Fluoride Application

Fluoride is usually applied topically with oral hygiene products, such as toothpaste, dental floss, or mouthwash. What are the effects of fluoride on our teeth?

  • Makes tooth enamel resistant to harmful acids and bacteria,
  • Supports the enamel remineralization – reconstruction in places where minor cavities appear,
  • Inhibits the growth of bacteria that contribute to tooth decay,
  • Creates a protective barrier against plaque and tartar,

Fluoride application strengthens enamel and is used in dental procedures to protect our teeth from tooth decay. Your dentist will apply a special varnish with a high concentration of fluoride on your teeth. At Great Lakes Dental Excellence, our dentist can also prescribe fluoride gel to be applied topically at home. However, if necessary, we might recommend systemic fluoride in a form of a pill.

Our team at Great Lakes Dental Excellence is committed to your family’s oral health, and that includes fluoride application during your regular exam.
