Do You Have TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder isn’t always obvious, but as soon as you suspect you’re dealing with it, you should contact our office at once. TMJ issues can stem from teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, dental misalignment, physical trauma, or even stress. If you’re experiencing frequent jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when you chew, or difficulty opening and closing your mouth, these symptoms often indicate its presence. Other common symptoms include facial soreness, ear pain, or the sensation that your jaw is often locked. It’s also important to note that these symptoms typically don’t resolve on their own and only worsen with time, making treatment all the more important.
Treatment Options for TMJ Disorder

Although TMJ disorder can have some pretty significant health implications, it’s treatable through a variety of means. Here at our office, we offer a few different forms of TMJ treatment, including equilibration/occlusal adjustments, as well as occlusal splints that can be digitally designed and fabricated right here in our New Baltimore office.
Equilibration, commonly referred to as occlusal adjustments, involves reshaping the biting surfaces of teeth to correct misalignments that might be triggering TMJ issues. Its primary goal is to achieve harmony between the upper and lower teeth, ensuring that they can properly align and distribute even pressure.
Occlusal splints aim to accomplish this same purpose but instead involve the use of special, custom-made oral devices that are worn at night. These can effectively mitigate damage caused by bruxism since the teeth won’t be in contact with each other, and they can also reposition the jaw at night to relieve strain being placed on the jaw joints.
